WOSU Public Media, the public broadcasting stations of The Ohio State University,
operates two television stations (Columbus and Portsmouth) and six radio stations
(AM and FM in Columbus and FM in Mansfield, Portsmouth, Coshocton and Marion).
Production facilities for both radio and TV are located on the Ohio State campus
in Columbus, and in the fall of 2006, WOSU will open a digital media center
(WOSU@COSI) that includes high-definition studios, a media training lab, hands-on
exhibit and community space. WOSU AM went on the air in 1922, WOSU FM in 1949,
and WOSU TV in 1956.
Reaching more than 1.3 million people a week, WOSU contributes to the university’s
mission of service and outreach and supports its Academic Plan. WOSU is a broadcast
technology leader in the region, becoming the first local station to begin broadcasting
digitally in radio, the first to datacast media directly to computers, and among
the first in the country to begin providing documentaries for download to iPods.
WOSU TV provides 24-hour high-definition programming, along with digital channels,
WOSU Ohio and WOSU Plus. Beyond broadcast projects, WOSU provides many other
services to the community such as: over 100 early childhood caregiver workshops
every year; digital media resources online to K-12 teachers in 21 counties; educational
multimedia programming produced for the classroom in line with Ohio academic
standards; and assistance to Somali and Latino populations specifically with
media assistance and programming.
WOSU Public Media continues a long tradition of excellence and service to the
Central Ohio community.
