Originally from Delaware, Ohio, Zachary Nowland is a third-year accounting student in the Fisher College of Business, with plans to pursue an MBA. His scholarship has allowed him to pursue his education while maintaining financial stability and independence.
How would you describe your overall Ohio State experience?
I can sum it up in one word—amazing. I was recruited to play varsity baseball for the Buckeyes and fell in love with the university after one overnight visit early in my senior year of high school. I’ve met my best friends here and made so many memories. I could not have made a better college decision.
What has your scholarship enabled you to do?
Every quarter I receive a direct deposit into my checking account. After my tuition and fees are paid, it covers my books, rent, food, and school supplies. I have not once asked my parents for money during my time at Ohio State. I cannot stress how good that feels—my scholarship has taken a huge burden off my family.
How do you feel knowing that portions of your education are made possible because someone chose to make a donation?
I’ve had the opportunity to meet the manager of the Glenna R. Joyce Scholarship Fund twice. I told him that he has no idea of the huge impact his work makes on the lives of so many young people. I told him that receiving the Joyce scholarship is the thing I am most proud of in life. Being able to look my mother in the eyes and tell her, “You don’t have to worry about the next four years” is something I will never, ever forget.
Why is giving back important?
Not having to pay for books or tuition or any of the endless college expenses can mean the difference between going to the doctor when you are sick or ignoring your symptoms. It can mean the difference between four years of enjoyment and four years of stress. I’ve benefited from the generous donations of others and have experienced firsthand the difference that donations can make in the lives of others. I want to be on the other end of the exchange by donating in the future.
