As a fourth-year women’s studies and nursing student in Arts and Sciences and the College of Nursing, Samantha Boch aspires to become a women’s health nurse practitioner. She plans to work with those who are underprivileged in order to promote social change. Her scholarships have had a large impact on her college experience, allowing her to become involved with many student organizations around campus.
Why did you choose to attend Ohio State?
Ohio State offered me the most financial support. As a first-generation college student from a town that borders Appalachia, I was limited in deciding upon which college to attend. I was also conflicted on whether I wanted to attend such a large university, because I felt that I needed a smaller atmosphere. After the first quarter, however, my worries ceased and I have not regretted my decision since. I dread the thought of what would have happened had I not chosen Ohio State.
What have been some of the highlights of your Ohio State experience?
Words can’t really describe an Ohio State experience. It has shaped who I am today and who I will become. The highlights have occurred through my involvement in and around campus. I’ve gone on five Buck-I-Serv trips, dedicating my time to volunteering with nonprofits around the country. I also volunteer with the Girls Circle project. Being tapped into SPHINX senior class honorary and getting accepted as one of the attendees for Ohio State’s Homecoming Court were also two highlights this past year.
How have the scholarships you have received from Ohio State affected your college experience?
First of all, scholarships have enabled me to continue my education here at Ohio State. They’ve allowed me to devote my discretionary hours outside of academia to involvement on campus or in the community, rather than maintaining a job. Without scholarships, I would not have nearly as many opportunities for personal growth such as volunteering in Nepal or spending time each week with middle school girls. Without scholarships I simply would not be here.
Do you plan to give back to Ohio State after graduation?
I hope to one day create scholarships designed for those that participate in Ohio State’s large-scale community service projects. Sometimes the trips we create can be pretty expensive and I hate how it can hinder a student’s willingness to serve due to financial reasons. I plan to contribute to organizations and experiences that have given me the most growth as a person. Helping women and men in their pursuit toward a greater cause is something I hope to be a part of, because without alumni I wouldn’t be where I am today.
