Heather Bowen, originally from Quincy, Ill., is enrolled in Ohio State’s College of Optometry. Though she chose Ohio State for its high ranking in terms of boards passing rate, research, and faculty, the financial aid she received influenced her decision to pursue her professional studies as a Buckeye.
How have your scholarships affected your experience as an Ohio State student?
The financial support has helped reduce the burden of paying out-of-state tuition. It has afforded me the chance to purchase other materials for classes that, while not required, help me to really understand the material. I am very appreciative of those who have donated not only for me, but to benefit other students. When you donate, you make a tangible difference in many lives.
What attracted you to your field of study?
After shadowing many health professionals, I found optometry to be the most enjoyable experience. Optometrists generally love their profession, and my optometrist seemed to be the happiest, balancing work, family, and community involvement. It’s an interesting subject.
What have been some of the highlights of your time on campus so far?
I love the sporting events, and free activities through the student union. I also like representing the school at national meetings, and enjoying the student leadership roles available here.
Are you active in community or volunteer work, or participate in student organizations
on campus?
I volunteer at church, in low income areas, and also help with any volunteer work that comes along at school, when I have time. As far as campus activities are concerned, I’m active in the American Optometric Student Association, the National Optometric Student Association, and Epsilon Psi Epsilon, an optometry fraternity. I’m also an optometry student ambassador, meeting with prospective students and helping out at school open house functions.
