The Ohio State University College of the Arts received a Women & Philanthropy Award for $12,430 for its new Music, Media and Enterprise program, a groundbreaking concept that prepares students in the School of Music for a wider range of career opportunities after graduation.
The Music, Media and Enterprise program integrates studies from a variety of disciplines, including business, law, engineering and arts policy. Interests that students can pursue include sound engineering, music publishing, film composing, arts administration and music software programming.
“The Music, Media and Enterprise program re-negotiates the relationship between creativity and the marketplace by offering students both a music business curriculum and an applied technology curriculum that concentrates on media and multimedia,” says Dr. Mellaseneh Morris, director of the School of Music. “By looking beyond traditional approaches to ‘music industry’ study, this innovative program expands and redefines the study of music and musical practices in the 21st century.”
With the assistance of Women & Philanthropy, the new program is on its way to ultimately offering a bachelor’s degree and minor that will qualify music graduates for a wide range of positions within the music world.
“Thanks to Women & Philanthropy’s big-hearted gift, the Music, Media and Enterprise program will uniquely qualify our students for a wide range of positions in the music world,” says Karen Bell, former dean of the College of the Arts and current associate vice president of arts outreach. “We are tremendously excited to have been selected as a Women & Philanthropy Award recipient. We so appreciate the support.”
